The development of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), sometimes referred to as connected vehicles or smart cars, is rapidly changing the face of transportation. The CES show in the U.S. has become the showcase for various brands of vehicles and various types of advanced smart cars with innovations such as the continuous upgrading of automated driving and the use of artificial intelligence that integrates high-precision mapping applications. In addition, the constant innovation of technology and services happening in the development of automotive software, intelligent electric vehicles, and human machine interfaces will also change the appearance of future transportation.
At present, the development of IoV in every nation is entering a phase of thinking about the best profit model. Frost & Sullivan estimates that, by 2020, global IoV sales will exceed 51 million cars. In this trend of continuous growth, how the IoV market can uncover killer apps and find profitable peripheral business models are the major issues that every car maker and relevant business operator are exploring. They are also the keys to IoV developing prosperously in the future.
Concerning the focuses of the major markets; safety, anti-theft, vehicle diagnostics, and emergency assistance are the major service concerns in the North American region. New service models, such as eMaintenance and eRetailing are also appearing, where a car’s sensors are used to monitor the operating status, the longevity of spare parts, and to remind car owners when it is time to replace serviceable items, and even to notify the service center to stock these parts. With the use of the internet, automobiles may have their programs updated over-the-air (OTA) without even having to go back to the service center.
The European region, with its early adopters of IoV applications, focuses on automated emergency calls and road-side repair and assistance service. When drivers encounter automobile accidents or emergency breakdowns, distress messages can be sent immediately. In the event of a vehicle breakdown, the information on the faulty parts will also be sent to the service center to reduce the waiting time required for the replacement parts to be ordered. Some manufacturers also offer stolen vehicle tracking services.
In Mainland China, where the number of connected cars is increasing rapidly, the development of location based services (LBS) is thriving. According to the car owner's usage habit data and location information, these services could provide promotional information on coffee shops of the driver's preference along the route, linking together customization and big data with diversified services.
The IoV requires a huge amount of innovative software/hardware and system programs; for example, among smartphone connectivity interfaces, CarPlay, developed by Apple, and Android Auto, launched by Google, are being adopted by North American and European carmakers such as Audi, BMW, Ford, GM, and Volkswagen. F&S estimates that by 2020, more than 70% of vehicles will support these two systems.
Concerning the development of automotive smartphone software applications, carmakers are gradually abandoning the self-development model and are accepting open-platform or third-party development to increase the R&D speed and to help snatch market business opportunities. In the development of hardware, the adoption of hardware/software integration provides a more convenient way to introduce vehicle connectivity to car owners, thereby creating new profit engines. For example, the Snap in Adapter, launched by BMW, allows smartphones to link with the original carmaker's connectivity device, and offers car owners the option of installing and using IoV services.
In addition to technological R&D and profit model issues, the application of IoV also involves the issues of information security and personal privacy, as well as the challenges of ensuring system stability and providing user customization. The related industries in Taiwan have the ICT advantage, but further exploration of the direction of IoV applications development and actual market requirements are needed. Providing services, for specific market segments may even be required. Continuous improvement of service popularity and coverage throughout Taiwan is needed, so that Taiwan's ICT "Industry" advantage may be expanded to the ICT's "Environmental" advantage, allowing Taiwan's industries to get ahead of the game in the development of vehicle intellectualization.
