The big event of early 2017 was the U.S. Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where more than twenty thousand new products were on display, announcing that the ICT industry is taking off in a big way, and 2017 promises to be both an exciting and spectacular year with a complete spectrum of high tech products from A to Z being launched and accompanied by a plethora of business opportunities.
Aside from being the first letter in the English alphabet, A is the most dominant letter of the ICT industry; for example: Apple, AR (Augmented Reality), AI (Artificial intelligence), Autonomous Vehicles (self-driving cars), and the App Store are the drivers that lead the ICT market growth. Analysts estimate that the average growth of Apple's revenue this year will be 6%, and it is the unflappable indicator of the industry’s prosperity.
B is for Battery. Today, there is a standing joke that the battery should be the most fundamental element in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, showing its indispensable market position. Panasonic and Tesla are working together to step up the construction of the Gigafactory, where huge capacity 50GW batteries will be produced.
C is the letter with the most abundant variety: Computer, Communication, Consumer (collectively referred to as 3Cs), Car Electronics, Camera, Content, Control, Culture, Cloud, Connectivity and so on. Hon Hai first extended the company’s position from 3Cs to 8Cs, and now its industry scope has been extended again to 10Cs, and its business opportunities are still broadening.
D is for significant words, such as: Digitalization, Data Center, Deep Learning, and Drone. The development of data centers will drive a 6% growth for the Server industry. The above mentioned words are strong Growth Poles.
The most important E word is Electronics (the entire electronics industry). Additionally, the development of Electric vehicles is flourishing; the sales volume this year is expected to reach 1.25 million units, a growth of 32%. Whether or not Tesla’s Model 3 will have a smooth and timely delivery remains a global concern.
F is for Facebook. The enthusiasm for the social network site persists, so much so, that it is expecting a growth of 34% in revenue this year; the popularity of Fiber-optic communications continues. G is for Google, which leads the way in all of its associated areas, with its revenue growth this year maintaining a 16% rate; and Games, with its market estimated at 106.5 billion U.S. dollars and a growth of 6.9%. H is for HPC (High Functioning PC) and Home (smart home), where the focus is on the intelligent home voice control assistant and control system.
I is for Internet, which is already a necessity of life; IC: the global semiconductor market is expected to grow 1.8% this year, and the output in Taiwan is expected to grow 6%; and IoT (Internet of Things) with its business opportunities expanding in more areas, especially in Smart Home, Smart City and Internet of Vehicles.
M is for Mobile Phone. There will be a moderate growth of about 4% for smartphones this year. The biggest highlight of this year will be the release of the successor to the iPhone 7, the next generation iPhone 8, which will drive the global ICT industry chain to upgrade in response, boosting the industry growth momentum to maintain and improve the industry’s prospects.
P is for PC (Personal Computer), whose sales will continue their gradual slide to just 257 million units as it approaches the bottom of a long-term L-shaped recession. R is for Robot; its broad applications are changing the production methods and lifestyles of humanity. IDC indicates that the global robotics market in 2016 was about 80 billion U.S. dollars, and this will increase to 135 billion U.S. dollars by 2019, an annual growth rate of 17%. U is for Uber, whose scope is expanding in the sharing economy.
T is primarily for Television, the global market scale of which for this year is 225 million units with an annual growth of 2.7%. It still has enough strength to support the panel industry in Taiwan. V is for VR, immersive virtual reality. IDC estimates that the number of head-mounted VR devices shipped in 2016 was about 10.1 million units, and that this may reach 61 million units by 2020, showing a high growth momentum.
W is for WiFi and Wearables (wearable technology). The next level up from the battery in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, is WiFi, which is now ubiquitous. Google Fiber is planning to enable 1 Gbps WiFi. Y is for YouTube. Internet video has become the favorite among internet users, where video quality has been improved to 4K. Finally, Z is for ZigBee, which is seeking to become the communications standard for home IoT.
Overall, major manufacturers and product groups are showing a 3% to 6% steady growth rate in the new year. After reaching their peak this year, smartphone sales will begin to peak with every new generation. ICT's new technologies are charging full steam ahead; and Taiwan manufacturers and their products should scramble for the business opportunities.
